RootsMagic and FamilySearch treat sources in very different ways, which may lead to some confusion when trying to transfer sources back and forth. RootsMagic 7 is the clear (and only) choice if you want to take your research on the road and don’t have a laptop. RootsMagic 6.2 and later allows you to view the sources for a RootsMagic person and a FamilySearch Family Tree person side by side, as well as transferring those sources back and forth. It lets you dive in right away, spending less time learning the program and more time researching your family. A new rewritten version of the RM software is Rootsmagic 8 which is. This has worked out better for me so far and still have access to images of records regardless of my Ancestry account status. Family Historian 6 is excellent if you want ease of use. We also use this software with Family Search WORLD FAMILY TREE - an interesting. I switched over to familysearch as my main database and make local copies of it with which works a lot like Rootsmagic. I still use Ancestry but simply upload Gedcom files to it. If you import to Rootsmagic or any other program, it'll break the multimedia links that Ancestry creates. If you don't modify the Gedcom file in any way, this works. RootsMagic users also gain the ability to easily share and. You can transfer people, events, notes, source citations, and even pictures between the two systems. That meant I had to download an Ancestry tree as a Gedcom and then upload it to another user. From the RootsMagic blog: RootsMagic’s TreeShare for Ancestry will let you move data between your RootsMagic files on your computers and your personal Ancestry online trees. You can only sync one tree and you can't link multiple DNA results to a single tree. The synchronization issue was one reason but another is the DNA linking. I basically gave up on the Ancestry tree. Marriage records are handled differently within Rootmagic and Ancestry so you can look forward to weird stuff happening there with duplicate marriage records, duplicate partners, or an inconsistency where a marriage record is only assigned to one partner. Want to standardize on place names, that's a nightmare waiting to happen since the naming defaults are different between Ancestry and Rootsmagic. If you're doing any significant changes, the acknowledging every single change with the app will quickly become cumbersome. The one that I'm familiar with is Rootsmagic.
